There is no accountability if there is not an opportunity to account for action. Regardless of the method or frequency, follow-up is critical in creating action. It could be just one report upon completion, or it could be progress checks along the way. It could be a full report in a team meeting. It could be a simple e-mail confirming action by a certain date. Always agree on when and how follow-up will occur. If you don't take action, all the healthy talk in the world is for nothing and will eventually lead to disappointment and hard feelings. While both are helpful outcomes, both fall short of the real purpose: To get unstuck by taking the appropriate action. The ultimate goal of dialogue is not just to create a healthy climate or even a clear understanding between parties. Finally, it takes us to the only place where the feelings can be resolved: The source (the facts and story behind the emotions). It's hard to feel defensive and curious at the same time. Rather than ask, "What's the worst and most personal way I can take this?" (leading to defensiveness), we should ask, "Why would a reasonable, rational, and decent person think or feel this way?" (leading to curiosity). It also helps curb our own defensive response. Exploring helps others move away from harsh feelings and knee-jerk reactions and toward the root causes of those feelings and reactions. When others go to silence or violence, actively explore their path. We know what they think, but we don't know what we or others may have done. They show us their feelings and share their stories, but we may not know what they actually observed. We typically join them at the end of their Path to Action. We have to find a way to move others back to their facts. By asking ourselves the "and" question, we force our brains to move to higher-level, more complex thinking.Īs we see others moving to silence or violence-sharing mostly stories or very little at all-it helps us stay in dialogue if we can encourage them to share their entire Path to Action, or the explanation of how emotions, thoughts, and experiences lead to our actions. Replacing "either/or" thinking with "and" thinking provides a way to reduce the ill effects of adrenaline. When it comes to crucial conversations, "and" thinking makes a great deal of sense. As we find ourselves forgetting our original goal of candidly and honestly adding meaning to the pool and instead striving to look good, win, or achieve some other unhealthy objective, we need to ask ourselves, "What do I really want?" Also, while it's true that sometimes we are caught in a genuine dilemma with only two bad options, most of the time we do have healthy alternatives. Our next change in heart comes with a change in motive. We need to examine our personal role in any problem we encounter. Our first change in heart comes from realizing that as much fun as it would be to fix other people, we need to work on ourselves first. In order to break away from silence and violence, we have to change our behavior.

I've always felt that VIII is so awful it shouldn't even be called "Ultima". I've played all of the Ultima games completely through, and boy what a mixed bag they are. well, he didn't, the thing would have been as big as a house and would have smothered all of us. Now, if he'd used paper with 1/2 inch grid boxes. Here's what's really crazy: I think he used graph paper with 1/4 inch grid boxes (they weren't tiny, I definitely remember that). It was Ultima IV's Britannia Jon had painstakingly mapped the entire thing on graph paper. Jon and his friend worked to unfold the mystery and then held it up between them, standing on two chairs on either side of the little dorm room. sorry!Īnyway, Jon had what looked like a bunch of pieces of 8x10 sized paper, taped together at the edges, and the whole thing folded many times. and he came bearing gifts! Wizardry V, no less, which I'd never played, so I was stoked.Ĭaveat: I'm telling this to the best of my memory, which ain't what it used to be lol, so if there are mistakes. My freshman year of college, spring of 1986, a close friend from high-school (named Jon) and one of his school buds stopped by my dorm to visit. Others I just load up in Paint.Net and annontate with text boxes and crudely drawn arrows. Nowadays, when I use scanned maps I print the ones that are really useful and annotate them with a pencil, to help with the old-school mood. I assumed that this meant that Times of Lore didn't require "map-notes", and finished it without them. I know becasue I tried the same thing on my glossy "Times of Lore" map and some of the printing came off with the tape. The cellophane tape would have damaged paper maps, especially those that used glossy magazine-like paper and inks. For my 11-year old mind this was the obvious reason that Garriott packed cloth maps with his software. Really shows you're playing these games with a "modern" mind-set.īack in the day, I did something similar when playing Ultima V in my C64 : I remember preparing little paper labels (same scale as the existing map text) and taping them to the cloth map. Gee, what you did with the map scan is quite awesome. In my endeavor to finally build a game from the ground up (in C++ of course) I find myself asking the immortal question of "What made CRPG's great?" Today, with the genre being flooded with the same micro-transaction piles of dung and WoW-clones, it's difficult to see what is so great about CRPG's today unless you're an old fogey like myself that still has memories of the THAC0-driven "Good 'Ole Days" to cling onto. I think, however, it may be time to revisit this old gem, as I'm looking a bit more objectively at really what made old RPG's great. I think the game was just simply too advanced for me at that time, and the non-linear progression was quite contradictory in contrast to the other RPG's that I was used to at the time, such as Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy, and, one of my all-time favorites, Phantasy Star (one and two). I must admit though, that it was a bit before my time (I was quite the young lad back then) so I rented it numerous times, and I believe that I eventually bought it, but never seemed to make any headway. Seriously though, Ultima:Exodus (as it was called on the NES I don't believe it carried the III moniker) was my first introduction to the Ultima series. Oh wait, dangitall, I'm late by a good week. I then created a vector layer to draw on top of the map, so I can note the locations of towns and their names. One word on the mapping: the game isn't conducive to graph paper, so I imported the cloth map as a raster image into a geographic information system (GIS) program called MapInfo Professional. I haven't gotten a ship yet, and I can see towns and dungeons off shore, so I need to find a frigate next. Other clues-and I'm not sure how they relate yet-tell me to seek a place called Ambrosia, seek the Shrines of Truth, journey through a whirlpool (I have a feeling these are all related), seek the jester in the Castle of Fire, and to find "marks" and "cards." There are apparently four of the latter, and I need to use the command to stick them into panels somewhere. From those that have something original to say, I've learned that Exodus lies beyond the silver snake, and I'll need to find exotic arms to defeat him, as only they will protect me from great evil. As with Ultima II, each person gives you exactly one line of dialog and most of them offer stock responds (although not as dumb or annoying as in Ultima II). In the early stages of the game, I've been exploring and mapping Sosaria-which isn't all that large-visiting towns, and getting clues from the locals.
When this gas becomes trapped in the dough’s airtight gluten matrix, the dough begins to rise, resulting in a final loaf of bread with a light and airy texture.Īll recipes on The Perfect Loaf are naturally leavened in other words, you won’t find any commercial yeast or instant yeast here. The wild yeasts produce carbon dioxide gas and ethanol during fermentation. Generally speaking, bacteria are primarily responsible for producing organic acids (lactic acid and acetic acid) that contribute to sourdough bread's flavor, texture, and storage qualities. A sourdough starter culture is used to seed fermentation in new dough when making sourdough bread. Sourdough is a specific type of bread created through a natural fermentation process involving suitable bacteria and wild yeasts in the environment (i.e., the air and even a baker’s hands) and, most importantly, on the grain itself. But, before we go on this beginner’s sourdough bread recipe, let’s first take a look at what sourdough bread is. It was–and still is–exciting to mix such elemental ingredients and to see them produce beautiful, life-giving sustenance: it is modern-day alchemy. There was something about the whole bread-making process that I found captivating. Be sure to see the end for a complete video walkthrough of me making this recipe! My Beginner's Sourdough Bread has a light, open crumb (interior) with a deeply-colored, crunchy crust.Īs the new obsession set in, I started making fresh sourdough bread for every meal. This Beginner's Sourdough Bread post has several videos where I walk you through each step of the sourdough bread-making process. And you know what? We ate the entire thing. “Yeah, pretty good bread.” Only later did she fess up that it was “actually just okay, to be honest.” But all-in-all the bread had a nice rise, a crunchy and well-colored crust, and it did taste great considering it was my first loaf of any kind of bread. I folded ever-so-gently while I held my bread until, hours later, I pulled my first sourdough from the oven. It wasn't until I read a sourdough book cover to cover and painted it with post-it notes, highlights, and dog-eared pages that I felt ready to put my newborn sourdough starter to work. I'd heard others talk about flat and dense loaves-dough that never rose. The goal is to combine elements in order to create the new elements (e.g.I was intimidated to make my first loaf of sourdough bread. And while scans are effective here, they’re not particularly fast. This app doesn’t always restore files using their original names, so tracking down your recovered photography can be tricky. If you want a photo recovery service to do a brilliant job in every professional and personal situation, this is the app you need. There’s nothing about the interface that’s particularly innovative, though, and it’s here that Stellar encounters a couple of minor weaknesses. If you don’t have Stereo Mix, use Windows WASAPI to record your PC’s audio in an application like Audacity. i cant recommend soundflower cuz in past i had lots of issues with that, but Loopback by rogue amoeba on mac works great, and for Windows PC is bit confusing at first is voicemeeter or voicemeeter banana. Creating functional and beautiful colors themes for effective use is a delicate process however. You can create your own color themes and it is easy and quick to apply these colors to all of your slides at once. Since PowerPoint 2007 was introduced, the color design function in PowerPoint really comes in handy when designing presentations. You can sometimes find partially assembled units, but you will still have to combine the pieces yourself.
